Nation Treasure and Riddles

National Treasure is a very popular movie series about treasure hunting and riddles. Here’s one of the riddles from the first movie:

The legend writ, the stain affected. The key in Silence undetected. Fifty-five in iron pen, Mr. Matlack can’t offend.

The answer is the constitution of the USA. And here is one from the second movie:

The entrance shall only be revealed under a cloudless rain.

The answer is that Ben and his friends must put water on the entrance to the treasure on a sunny day. For more riddles and full explanations from the movie visit Riddles of National Treasure and Riddles of National Treasure 2.

Movies and Riddles are often coupled in an effort to create suspense and intelligence. Every time a riddle is reveled in a movie it creates a countdown, if the riddle isn’t solved quickly enough the protagonist will fail and all of their efforts will have been for nothing. An example of this is in National Treasure when Ben Gates must find the treasure and throughout the entire story he is given several riddles that create a sense of urgency as his old partner Ian also tries to get the treasure. This urgency can be felt in the trailer.

Intelligence is the other aspect of these riddles. The character that solves the riddle and eventually triumphs is characterized as the genius of the story, a character trait that has always been very appealing in stories.
