Riddles From Movies

Movies and Riddles are often coupled in an effort to create suspense and intelligence. Every time a riddle is reveled in a movie it creates a countdown, if the riddle isn’t solved quickly enough the protagonist will fail and all of their efforts will have been for nothing. An example of this is in National Treasure when Ben Gates must find the treasure and throughout the entire story he is given several riddles that create a sense of urgency as his old partner Ian also tries to get the treasure. This urgency can be felt in the trailer.

Intelligence is the other aspect of these riddles. The character that solves the riddle and eventually triumphs is characterized as the genius of the story, a character trait that has always been very appealing in stories.

Here are some riddles from some of the greatest movies of our time (all of the answers to the riddles listed here and more riddles from the movie can be found at the link):

An hour long you’ll have to look,
And to recover what we took,
But past an hour, the prospect’s black,
Too late it’s gone, it won’t come back.

An hour long you’ll have to look,
To recover what we took.

RIddles and Smart Guys From Movies

Smart central characters from movies are always encountering and solving riddles: Batman, National treasure, Sherlock Holmes, and the Da Vinci Code all have smart central characters who solve lots of riddles and puzzles to save the day, and we love to see them do it. When the antagonist’s eyes light up and we realize they have discovered a clue, we feel their excitement. While they solve the riddle and move from clue to clue we get almost as excited as they do, experiencing each revolution when they do. When the riddle has been solved the character has overcome a great mental obstacle and we feel more insightful for now seeing what the character saw.

This trailer for National Treasure really demonstrates how the solving of riddles is exciting and just as involving as explosions and gun fire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoaL5QmWWDA
